Chris James is a young, talented, determined R&B artist out of Moreno Valley, CA. He gained his love for music when he was 4 years old growing up in Montgomery, AL, listening to Al Green, Marvin Gaye, and Luther Vandross. Chris has sang in numerous talent shows and showcases and has received rave reviews from any and everyone who’s watched him perform. “Music has always been a top priority in my life. And I dedicate my life to making good music that people can feel and relate to. That’s what I’m all about” Chris says. He is currently working on his debut mixtape entitled “Who I Am Pt.1”, slated to come out in early September. He’s an artist that has real music about real things, and he just wants the world to know who Chris James is.

Meet Young Flip

Gary Kornegay II aka “Flip” was born November 26, 1993 in Los Angeles, California. Like many young children he enjoyed the sound of music immediately and found himself spending countless hours watching Michael Jacksons “Moonwalker” movie repeatedly. Every so often his parents would find Flip on the floor asleep next to the television with the channel tuned to BET.

It’s seemed to Flip’s mom at first that music and dancing was a phase that he would eventually grow out of; but as he aged into a pre-teen the desire to listen contently to music increased to the point where he wouldn’t do his homework or chores unless music was playing in his ears. This was no surprise to Flip’s father because he too had a passion for music working as a club D Jay in the early 80’s.

In 2001 when Flip was 8 years of age his father established a small record label with a few friends who were already making a name for themselves in the music business as songwriters and producers. Through that relationship Flip was asked to attend a taping of a television show called “All That” on Nickelodeon which featured P. Diddy as the performer.

During intermission of the taping Flip was selected to go on stage and dance in front of a few hundred teenagers to keep them entertained between sets. With no hesitation Flip ran up on stage and lit the crowd up with his confidence and outgoing personality and unrehearsed dance routine. When the taping was over Flip had the pleasure of going backstage to meet P. Diddy and the rest of the cast. After this rare and unexpected performance Flip was hooked on the energy and response he received from the crowd.

Unfortunately his father denied Flips request to enter the entertainment business as an artist, dancer and entertainer. Flip’s dad already knew what the entertainment business could do to young impressionable kids if not guided correctly. Therefore Flip’s father informed him that Flip was too young to take on the full-time commitment it would take to make him a star and knowing the chances are extremely limited for his success. However, Flip’s father promised him that if he decided at a later age to really commit to doing the things it would take to make him a star he would support him 100% but it would have to be after the age of 16.

Today at the age of 17 the pursuit of this long time dream has become a reality. Not only is Flip a talented lyricist, songwriter and performer, he is also the CEO of Drop Squad Distribution, Inc. a company he created with the financial help of his father and six private investors. Today Flip’s influences have changed from Michael Jackson and the Backstreet Boys to Outkast, Common and the Fugies. Flip doesn’t compare himself to anyone because he believes his style and delivery is unique making him a pioneer of a new innovative way of entertaining. “Music is a very important aspect of life. I find it amazing that it touches the deepest core of one’ s soul. Meet Terrence F….

- Where are you from?

Riverside, California

- What sparked your interest in music?

Welllll….when my mother was pregnant, she would play music to me while i was in her stomach and i would start to kick REALLY HARD. Ahahahahaha!! Sike. There is no cool story behind my interest in music. As a kid, i liked it because it made me feel good. Simple as that. And because it made me feel good, i became more and more involved. To the point where it was all i thought about. The amount of brain energy (is this a term?) that i exert towards music is sick. I have a problem. No, foreal. I really do.

- How would you describe your music? (genre)

It’s music. The idea of ‘genre’ does not exist to me. I’d be doing myself a disservice if i said that my music belongs in a certain genre, because the moment people begin to label themselves, they allow room for discrimination, if that makes sense. (Run-on sentence like a mug! Sorry, i was a Language Arts geek). It just is what it is. I’m rapping, but i wouldn’t call it ‘Rap’ or ‘Hip-Hop’. Those labels are corny to me. It’s just music….and it’s real. It touches the soul. I aim to make people cry. Not out of sorrow, but i want to touch people so deeply that they tear up because they feel that they’re finally understood. That’s all we search for as humans. We spend the entirety of our lives trying to understand ourselves and the world around us. People gravitate towards things that speak to THEM. Things they identify with. It could be with a certain t-shirt or a particular person. We lean towards what speaks to us. It’s all understanding. And if you can make a person feel understood through music, then that’s powerful.

- What are some of the challenges you face in the industry in your in?

The biggest challenge I face in this industry is getting people to listen without the aid of a proper co-sign or big-time popularity. I hate that shit. Fuck co-signs. Especially because in today’s generation, we’re so influenced by the power of popularity. It’s never been like this before. Ever. I mean, people will literally see that i have under 1,000 followers on Twitter and automatically dismiss me. They figure ‘If not that many people follow him, then he must not be worth shit.’ But as my notoriety increases, i notice how more people are willing to listen. But why tho?? My music hasn’t changed. Just my popularity. Being in this business teaches you alot about human behavior. It’s interesting.

- Name one of your biggest musical inspirations

Amy Winehouse. Her music is tite. She’s real, and although i may not be able to identify with many of the situations she sings about, it’s her honesty that i connect with. The truth always resonates. The truth is always relevant. To me, at least. I used to rap about guns and leavin’ niggas’ shirts wet, but when i discovered her music (back in 2007 i believe) and felt her honesty, and it made me wanna create more authentic music. You ever felt like you fell in love with an artist through their music? Like, FOREAL foreal in love? That’s how i felt. I would marry her. Fucked up and all. Think i’m lyin’…

- How could people get in contact with you and your music?

- How do you plan on making your self stand out in comparison to other artists?

I plan on separating myself by not rappin’ about getting my d-word s’d all the time. LOLOLOL! Nah, but on a more serious note, i tend to approach music from a very artistic perspective. There are no material references in my music. None. Well, except on ‘Detail’, but that song was about a dream. The problem with music now is that it has become more about image and more about the ‘cool’ as Lupe would put it, than about the art. I absorb the word ‘artist’ in a very literal sense. Artist. I am an ARTist. Not a nigga that be rappin’ and doin’ cool shit like wearing shades indoors and at night. Not a punchline king. Not a savior of a dying culture. I am no more than…..an artist. That’s how i separate myself.

- What is unique about your music?

I rap about a guy named Terrence. That’s pretty fuckin’ unique! Nobody’s doin’ THAT. Except for Pusha T….his name is Terrence too.

- Does your music reflect your experiences?

Definitely. In the MOST sincere way.

- So what do you think of the music today?

I love it. Of course i hear some things that i don’t like here and there, but that doesn’t kill the love i have for the culture. With the internet becoming the main source of where people get their music, it birthed a nation of niggas who DIDN’T NOBODY EVEN ASK THEM NOTHIN’. Bloggers. Commenters. It’s made it to where people just LOOK for reasons not to like an artist rather than finding a reason why they love them. Now, you have people constantly using stupid ass signs like > and <. Think about back like…10-15 years ago. We didn’t talk about music we didn’t like the way people do today. We focused on the music we loved. People who call themselves ‘hip-hop heads’ think they’re above people who aren’t hip-hop purists. It’s so funny when you think about it. It’s a literal WAR. It’s definitely not that serious. When you think about the world of music, and i mean when you REALLY think about it, it’s a great microcosm for the way the world works. Republicans thinking they’re above the democrats, the religious pointing fingers saying ‘YOU’RE WRONG, WE’RE RIGHT!’, the ‘rich’ claiming superiority amongst the ‘poor’. It’s all the same shit. We’re being Anti-Wack instead of Pro-Dope. If we focus on the music we love, instead of the music we hate, then there will be alot less strain and alot more appreciation. Love is the cure for anything. I honestly believe that.
